Burgeis / Burgusio, Italia

Der Mohrenwirt (Familie Theiner)

A four-star hotel, public restaurant and spa on the village square of Burgeis / Burgusio at 1,215 m, a hamlet of the Mals municipality in the Upper Vinschgau. It trades as Hotel zum Mohren & Plavina KG d. A. Theiner & Co., an Italian limited partnership (KG / società in accomandita semplice), VAT IT00199780214, CIN IT021046A1EUF9TFTD. The entity name still carries both houses even though the guest-facing brand was consolidated to 'Der Mohrenwirt' around 2019, when the previous domain mohren-plavina.com was redirected. Its lineage is the longest of any hotel in the Upper Vinschgau. The building is first documented in the 15th century as a hospice for travellers crossing the Reschenpass; the Theiner family took it over in 1665 and named it after the Moor of the Three Kings, patron of travellers and pilgrims. The house counts thirteen generations of the same family, and the bar is named Bar 1665 after the founding year. In 1979 the modern Haus Plavina was added beside the historic Mohren, and the two are sold as one hotel under one licence, one reception and one LTS record — 14 room categories in total, five in the old house (18–30 m²) and nine in Plavina (26 m² up to the Plattner Luxus Suite). The current hosts are Barbara, Andreas and Christian Theiner, who present themselves on the site as a three-way partnership rather than a single proprietor. Rates are published in full, which is unusual for the segment: €130–193 per person per night with five-course half-board in high season, €115–176 in the shoulder weeks, breakfast-only €15 less, plus a detailed children's tariff and long-stay reductions of 3% and 6%. The non-room side is broader than the room count suggests. Half-board guests eat in the Restaurant Culinarium; the Plattner Stube is a separate à-la-carte restaurant that the house explicitly opens to non-residents, listed by the regional tourist board with public opening hours (Monday and Friday to Sunday, 10:00–24:00) and a Guide Michelin marker. The wine cellar and the food menu are both published through the winePad tablet app, which carries a shopping basket. The spa runs to more than 2,000 m² with an indoor pool, outdoor whirlpool, sauna world, quiet area, yoga and fitness, nine named massages and a beauty menu, and the site states plainly that everything in the spa can be bought separately from board. The family also farms: the Mohrenhof supplies meat, vegetables, eggs and jam to the kitchen and hosts a guest experience reached by vintage tractor. The technology estate is six vendors deep and none of them are joined. The site is WordPress on the Betheme template, built and maintained by the Austrian agency weSEO. Room reservations run on Casablanca Hotelsoftware from Zirl in Tyrol (customer key I_39024_MOHRE). A separate WooCommerce store on the same domain sells vouchers — an open-value voucher, a breakfast voucher and package vouchers, delivered by email, post or collection — takes card payment through Stripe, and carries its own customer login at /mein-konto/ that has nothing to do with the reservation system. Email marketing is split across two platforms at once: the newsletter form posts to Mailchimp while the Mailjet WordPress plugin is installed and loading on every page. Enquiries arrive through a Contact Form 7 form with reCAPTCHA and land in a mailbox. Reviews are represented by a HolidayCheck badge whose '100%' figure is hard-coded into the page rather than fetched. Consent is handled by Borlabs Cookie, and a Google Tag Manager container loads once consent is given. Two operational faults are visible from outside. The first is that the online booking page does not work: every 'Buchen' button on the site leads to /de/online-buchen/, where the Casablanca widget container renders a loading spinner and never resolves. Tested in a real browser with all cookies accepted, the first-stage loader script is delivered but the second-stage widget bundle is never requested, so the page shows a permanent spinner rather than an availability search. The second is drift across the site: the footer 'Prospekte' link returns a 404, the blog has not been updated since October 2023, the Italian booking page is missing, and the tourist tax is quoted as €4.30 on one page and €3.70 on another. The house also runs a repeat-guest rule with no system behind it. A 'Stammgästewoche' offer grants 15% off the room rate for one week each October, and its published condition is that the guest has been coming for more than ten years. Nothing in the estate stores a ten-year visit history that such a rule could be checked against, and the offer page still carries the older 10% figure in its title and URL while the body text says 15%. The house belongs to no hotel consortium. Its published affiliations are the regional tourist board (Ferienregion Reschenpass and IDM Südtirol), the Südtirolbike partner network, the Meraner Weinhaus wine merchant and Vitalis / Team Dr Joseph, the South Tyrolean natural-cosmetics brand used in the spa.
